Send to Kindle

Kindles can't open EPUB files directly, but Amazon's free Send to Kindle service converts them for you (it takes PDFs too). Once sent, the book shows up in your Kindle library on your Kindle and in the Kindle app.

From a computer

  1. Download the book, then go to amazon.co.uk/sendtokindle (or the Send to Kindle page on your usual Amazon site).
  2. Sign in with the Amazon account your Kindle uses.
  3. Drag the file onto the page, or choose it from your files.
  4. Tick the devices you want it on and click Send.

It usually arrives within a few minutes. Make sure your Kindle is on Wi-Fi, and if the book doesn't appear, sync your Kindle from its settings.

From your phone

  1. Make sure the Kindle app is installed and signed in.
  2. Download the book, then find the file: on iPhone it's in the Files app under Downloads, on Android in your Downloads folder.
  3. Tap the file's Share button, choose Kindle, then tap Send.

By email

  1. Find your Kindle's email address (it ends in @kindle.com): on your Kindle under Settings, Your Account, Send-to-Kindle Email, or on Amazon under Manage Your Content and Devices, Preferences, Personal Document Settings.
  2. In the same Personal Document Settings, add the address you'll send from to the Approved Personal Document E-mail List. Amazon ignores anything else.
  3. Email the file to your @kindle.com address as an attachment.

If Amazon emails you to confirm the request, click the link in that email.

Good to know

  • A USB cable won't work for EPUBs: Kindles can't read EPUB files copied straight onto them. Use one of the ways above.
  • It may look slightly different: Amazon converts the file into its own format, so fonts and spacing can change a little.

Reading somewhere else?

There are guides for Kobo and Apple Books. Most other reading apps, like Google Play Books, open EPUB files too: open the file on your device and pick the app. Still stuck? Use the contact form and Louise will help.
